crossing points - created by
Kathie Schmid AND RABBLE-FISH ENSEMBLE
An original theatrical and musical performance
exploring borders using the words of SoCo residents – part of the
county-wide Performance Sonoma
festival.
Borders and boundaries create our lives’ vital distinctions. Our
original theater piece tells the stories of these edges and perimeters
of ourselves, and our personal, cultural and national identities. What
happens when these borderlands are crossed… or not?
Rabble-Fish Theater brings together world class performers and
musicians from Europe, NY and Sonoma County, to create this new work
using the collected words of local residents.
Our artists also cross borders of their disciplines, expanding their
usual expression forms. Evocative movement, live music soundscapes and
visual images encourage a deeper reflection upon the fluid and
fluctuating nature of boundaries and borders in our lives.
Contributing Artists:
Kathie Schmid: actor, writer, director (Sonoma County)
Dirk Rothbrust: percussion (Germany)
Janne Rättyä: accordion (Finland)
Daniel Derdula: performance (Sonoma County)
Gerhard Stäbler: composer (Germany)
Kunsu Shim: composer (Germany)
Jörg Detmold: dramaturge/co-director (Germany)

Rabble-Fish Theater, founded by Sonoma County actor
and artistic director Kathie Schmid, is dedicated to the creation of
dynamic, inter-disciplinary theater in Sonoma County through an ongoing
collaboration with visionary American and international performing
artists.

Soundwall
– a social performance, in Trier
(September 2005)
The collective project, Soundwall – a social performance,
under the artistic direction of and with compositions by Gerhard
Stäbler, will take place on September 2/3. A high-rise building in
Mariahof, a district of Trier, will be artistically enlivened and
musicalized. Contributors will include professional, new-music and
jazz musicians, a popular Trier "mouthart" band (Leiendecker
Bloas, under the direction of Helmut Leiendecker), members of several
choirs, the Music Association Tawern, as well as building occupants,
who through the use of their radios will add spice to the musical event.
The initial project impetus was based on bringing artistic enhancement
to urban back-courtyards, which sometimes exist in rather sad, damp and
dark conditions. Beginning with the observation that the sounds and
noise of the inhabitants – those of running radios, television or
banging kitchen utensils, for example – produce a pleasant soundscape,
Stäbler will stage an approximately one-hour long artistic event.
Through the cooperation with inhabitants the project can also help to
span the traditional chasm between "entertainment" and "serious"
culture.
Soundwall – a social performance,
belongs to the cultural project series "SCHW!NG" of the fabric company
Trier. A sociological study conducted by the University of Trier, will
accompany the project. The project development as well as the evening
performances will be documented in a radio feature production,
broadcast by SWR 2.
When: September 2/3
Where: on the grass in the back courtyard of the high-rise building on
Mariahof 69/71; entrance price: €5 (reg.), €3 (discounted)
"auf
dem wasser, ein gesicht"
(July 2005)
Kunsu
Shim and Gerhard Stäbler - composers from Korea and Germany have long
lived and worked together, mutually conceiving, planning and presenting
performance events. auf dem wasser, ein gesicht
(on the water, a face), a piece for koto, is their first joint
composition. Due to the characteristics of the instrument itself 13
identical strings, freely-movable bridges sounds in this piece emerge
onto unstable ground. Initially the strings are divided more or less in
the middle. During the performance the bridges wander primarily to the
left or the right edge, or to both edges. Thus, the ground under the
sounds not only wavers, but continuously changes like a reflection in
water…. Nothing remains constant, not even the playing position which
moves from the middle to the left or right, or demands both arms be
spread to opposite edges of the koto and simultaneously play there.
Meet
the Composer Gerhard Stäbler
(May 5-12, 2005)
This
was the motto of a one-week workshop in May 5-12, 2005 involving
instrumentalists and culminating with a row of concerts at the
University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. Composer
Gerhard Stäbler was invited by the young, Finnish Professor for
Accordion Studies, Janne Rättyä. Under the title, "Works for the
Accordion plus…", Gerhard Stäbler himself directed students in the
rehearsal and performance of numerous solo and chamber music pieces of
his, as well as his ensemble work, Den Müllfahrern von San
Francisco (For the Garbage Collectors of San Francisco) for
ensemble. These were then presented in three public concerts.
Enthusiastic discussions were stimulated by not only the extremely
expressive composition, Den Müllfahrern von San Francisco,
but, above all else, by Gerhard Stäbler’s own solo performances.
Following the Stäbler Portrait, and upon the invitation of Professor
Christian Utz, a three-hour seminar was held in the university music
sciences department. Its focus was the aesthetic and philosophical
foundations of Gerhard Stäbler’s compositional work.

Gerhard
Stäbler and Kunsu Shim in California
(April 22 May 1, 2005)
Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim traveled to California for a two-week
workshop at the Sonoma Academy and four concerts in San Francisco,
Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz. The two composers were invited by the
Pacific Rim Music Festival and the Rabble Fish Theater to visit the
western states of the US from mid-April to early May along with two
members of the EarPort Ensemble: percussionist Dirk Rothbrust and
accordion player Janne Rättyä. The main focus of the concerts and
workshops fell on the two composers, who have been working together for
more than 15 years. Although their music is based on a wide range of
cultures, they create their performances jointly and have increasingly
co-written joint compositions over the last five years. The performance
program was augmented with references to fluxus artists such as Nam
June Paik and George Brecht.
Stäbler and Shim constantly attempt to goad their audiences'
imagination and to sensitize their ears and other senses to new and
unexpected perceptions and ideas. Accordingly, the highly regarded
concerts centered on various simultaneous performances, e.g. Stäbler's hyacinths-liquids.scents
for tuned bottles, liquids, and aromas, in combination with Shim's good-bye
paradise for plants, Stilleben? for
one performer and wie ein Gesicht, wie eine Straße ... ein
Geräusch for accordion. Another item was Hommage
à Nam June Paik, a medley of performances by both composers.
Audiences everywhere responded with enthusiasm, especially at the
Pacific Rim Music Festival, given that the performances offered a fresh
and up-to-date counterpoint to the otherwise slightly academic chamber
music emanating from the Pacific Coast states over the last few years.
The concerts were supported by the German General Consulate and the
Goethe Institute in San Francisco, the San Francisco Art Institute, the
Rabble Fish Theater (Sonoma County) and Michael Friedenberg (Santa
Rosa).

Special
Adviser for Cultural Exchange 2005: sho player Mayumi Miyata is
presently touring Europe with new pieces by composers Gerhard Stäbler
and Kunsu Shim on behalf of The Japan Foundation
(February 26 / 27, 2005)
Mayumi Miyata has been nominated "Special Adviser for Cultural Exchange
2005" by The Japan Foundation. Thus she is presently in Europe for
concerts, new pieces by composers Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim with
her. The world famous virtuoso is presenting traditional and modern
music for sho, a typical Japanese instrument. Concerts take place in
Greece, Italy, France, Germany, and Luxembourg. Sho is a mouth organ, a
wind instrument made of several bamboo pipes. It has been frequently
used in East and South East Asia for more than 3000 years. In Japan sho
has been being played as part of orchestral music at court (Gagaku)
until today. It’s delicate and celestial and at the same time cluster
sounds are basic elements of this ceremonial music. Mayumi Miyata is
among the first who enhanced the potentials and the use of sho. An
extremely skilled player, she developed a modern type of sho and made
it well-known worldwide at the highest stage. Inspired by instrument
and musician, Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim each composed a new piece.
On her concert tour throughout Europe, Mayumi Miyata is giving debut
performances of these compositions in several countries: Shim’s not
I but the wind and Stäbler’s ...unter Glas
vergessen... are both written for sho and violin and being
played by Mayumi Miyata and Japanese violonist Tomoko Kiba. At the
opening of the exhibition "Jaume Plensa" in the "Wilhelm Lehmbruck
Museum" in Duisburg, Mayumi Miyata is also performing Gerhard Stäbler’s
new sho composition Spectre specifically designed
for this occasion. Apart from that, she is playing a significant role
in Kunsu Shim’s performance Orte for sho, action,
and electronic sounds. Apart from traditional music for sho and works
by John Cage, Toshio Hosokawa and others, Mayumi Miyata is presenting
some more pieces by Gerhard Stäbler when touring Europe, f.e. Palast
des Schweigens for sho solo and KARAS.KRHEN
which is a music for tape accompanied by sho, double bass, and a
vocalist. Palast des Schweigens is released on cd
by Wergo (2056-2 [edition zkm 6]) and Koch-Schwann (3-6760-2). A height
of the Miyata tour, undoubtedly, is the world premiere of the most
recent Stäbler piece for ensemble: Purple Rugs, a
piece for sho solo, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and marimba. The
Luxembourg ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin are playing the piece
for the first time on Feb 25th in Bourglinster in Luxembourg and on Feb
26th in the Cultural Centre Neumünster/Luxembourg-Grund.
2004
New
publications
(December, 2004)
Over
the course of 2004 several new publications by Stäbler appeared in the
realm of print and discography, featuring his works and texts. His
piece Wirbelsäulenflöte for piano, bass-Clarinet,
voices, conducting performer and 3 objects by the sculptor Thomas
Rother (percussion) from 1984 appeared in the German Music Council
series "Music in Germany 1950 - 2000" in the context of "Experimental
Music Theater: Instrumental Theater". In this piece Stäbler set the
poem of the same title by Wladimir Majakowski to music. (BMG/RCA 74321
73650 2).
kalt·erhitzt - a paraphrase on the
musical action for 113 grand pianos with the same title, for tape
(2000/2003) can also be found in the comprehensive series "Music in
Germany 1950 - 2000" under "Experimental Music Theater: Fluxus,
Happening- Performance": an installation by the artist Norbert Bauer
consisting of 113 grand pianos at the "Tuchfühlung 2" festival in
Langenberg in the Rhineland in 2000 was the basis for a performance
utilizing hands on keys, hammers, clubs and feet on the strings and
body, accompanied by choirs, ensembles and the vocal artist Sigune von
Osten. (BMG/RCA 74321 73652 2).
A 90 - page book also appeared, documenting contributions by
musicologists, composers and members of the popular culture scene
during a conference on the theme of "Music and Politics" which was
organized by the Berlin society for New Music. Under the title ...weiße
Räume erkunden... Stäbler presents cases where broadcasts of
his political works were either victimized by censorship - as was the
case with the WDR broadcast of drüber... or were
almost deleted from the concert program. Examples of political content
are also demonstrated based on the compositions ...strike
the ear... for string quartet (1987/88), Gift.Gelb
for electrified accordion, E-Bass and Tape (2002) and Journal
9´1119 for flutes, percussion, tape and scents (1996).

World
Premiere in Tokyo
(December 26, 2004)
The
Tokyo City Recital Hall will host the world premiere of Gerhard
Stäbler's new work ]life[ Sappho-fragments for
hichiriki and sho on December 26. Hitomi Nakamura (Hichiriki) and
Mayumi Miyata (Sho) will present the composition in the context of a
Hichiriki Recital Series. In addition, the composition solitude.consolation
for hichiriki and sho by German-Korean composer Kunsu Shim will
celebrate its premiere alongside further world premieres by Japanese
composers. Furthermore Ms. Nakamura covers the gamut from modern music
to traditional Japanese court music in her recital by including two
Gagaku-pieces, one for Hichiriki solo and another for Hichiriki, Sho,
and Ryuteki in her program.
The Hichiriki is a bamboo flute with a piercing, nasal sound, roughly
18 cm in length and a diameter of 1.5 cm. It has a one-octave range and
is the most prevalent instrument in Gagaku music aside the mouth organ
sho. The hichiriki with its razor-sharp tone often takes on the top
voice on this music.

MundStücke
(MouthPieces) and FootPrints, which originated
from the "Performances for Aficionados" concert series founded in 1999,
will receive their premiere Netherlands performance. In these pieces,
Stäbler explores much like in two other pieces from this series, HandStreiche,
EarPlugs, NasenTraum
(HandStrokes, EarPlugs, NoseDreams) and AugenTanz
(EyeDance) musical and scenic possibilities of human extremities and
sensory organs. In Footprints I & II the
step combinations are written out, including the stomping and tapping
noises to be produced. The MundStücke by contrast
emerge from whispering sounds or asemantic syllables presented
voiceless. Through the imaginative usage of different bocal positions
Stäbler integrates scenic elements in the sense of Kagel's Instrumental
Theater. Both pieces will be performed at the Nederlandse Muziekdagen
under the Title "Throw Catch" by soprano Barbara Hannigan and
percussionist Arnold Marinissen at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in
Utrecht.

(November 30, 2004)
Dancer and choreographer Eva Weissmann presented "von hier aus. Basel -
Raum Klang Tanz," her new project, in Basle. Weissmann, together with
four dancers, the saxophonist Felix Probst and double bassist Laurent
Charles developed "Visions of Space, Motion and Silence" to Stäbler's
composition elements (acute) created in 1999/2000
at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie). Four musical
layers breathing, blazing, flowing and grounded
served as basis for live-performances and were specifically defined
and accentuated for the Basle performance spaces with the participation
of Gerhard Stäbler. The performance took place on Tuesday, November 30
in the Tresorraum of the Gerbergasse 30 as part of the series "Forum

ARTIC
- an art magazine with an essay, a new composition and a CD with
hitherto unpublished works by Gerhard Stäbler
(November, 2004)
ARTIC - Texte aus der fröhlichen Wissenschaft, a very affectionately
crafted art magazine from Frankfurt/Main, is publishing in its upcoming
edition with the theme "voice" the essay KOM-VokalEssenz
by Gerhard Stäbler, a CD accompanying the essay with works by the
composer and the new composition AMTRACKS, an
audioassemblage for seven vocalists that Gerhard Stäbler wrote for
ARTIC. With Winter, Blumen and the Belfast
Breakfast Songs interpreted by Christina Ascher this CD
presents previously unpublished recordings. Gerhard Stäbler himself
presents new versions of Rachengold a
solo-performance consisting mainly of gargling noises and also for
the first time the "secret score" Rosenkranz
(1995). Together with the composition Wirbelsäulenflöte
for piano, bass-clarinet, voices, a conducting performer and three
objects by the Essen-based sculptor Thomas Rother (1984) and the
well-known early work drüber... for eight active
screamers, violoncello and tape (1972/73) the contributions on the CD
allow a "glimpse" into Stäblers treatment of voice in the last
thirty-odd years. The eighth ARTIC volume so far is anticipated to be
available over the course of October.

Two
world premieres in Saarbrücken and Düsseldorf
(November 12 14, 2004)
The
world premiere of two chamber music pieces was held in Saarbrücken and
Düsseldorf from November 12 through 14. The composition ]with
what eyes[ for violin, french horn and organ was performed
for the first time during the Saarbrücker Kammermusiktage. This work
was inspired by Sappho's Fragments that were published in the
Greek-English poetry anthology IF NOT, WINTER
with translations by the American poet Anne Carson. Between single
sounds syllables and words, lines and verses are transmitted over time
that document a deep knowledge of human cohabitation's thorny path
despite their thousands of years of erosion. Stäblers new composition
was contrasted by Brahms' Horntrio as well as horn and violin sonatas
by Beethoven. The concert was performed by Yamei Yu (Violin), XiaoMing
Han (Horn) und Andreas Rothkopf (Organ). A concert commemorating the
Japanese composer Seiichi Inagaki who passed away at the end of last
year, was held at the Düsseldorf EKO Haus, featuring the world premiere
of the monody blütenlos (blossomless) for
soprano, flute, violin, cello and piano (or accordion). The
composition, written in Duisburg in September 2004 and commissioned by
the EKO - House of Japanese Culture (Düsseldorf) is based on the poem
by the same title from the book Gesänge der Frühe
(Songs of Earliness) by Hermann-Josef Röllicke. The evenings artists
were Ingrid Schmithüsen (soprano), Carin Levine (flute), Geoffry
Wharton (violin), Wolfgang Sellner (cello) und Kristi Becker (piano).
Installations
and Performances at "Stadtlicht - Lichtkunst" in Duisburg
(October 16 November 15, 2004)
The
composers Kunsu Shim and Gerhard Stäbler will participate several times
in the "StadtLicht - LichtKunst" festival held in and around the
Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg starting on October 16, 2004. On
the opening day of this diverse project which shall "contribute to the
qualification of Light design in our cities" (curator Christoph
Brockhaus, director of the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum foundation), Paulo
Alvares (piano), Christina Ascher (voice), Kunsu Shim and Gerhard
Stäbler (sound engineering) will present Gerhard Stäblers new
composition ...leaving the gold... for voice,
piano and five CD-players (2004) simultaneously with Kunsu Shims inserting
music II for tape. Stäblers exploration of maximum - speed -
pitch repetition stands at the center of this work !?
a musical essay on the limits of what is possible for piano and
electronic sounds (2001) will set the frame for this world premiere,
together with a piano etude by György Ligeti interpreted by Paulo
Alvares.
In the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum's Kant park one can simultaneously
experience works by Kunsu Shim and Gerhard StÄbler as well: the
vernissage of the Sound - Light - Installation "Kantpark Stage" that
was developed in cooperation of both composers with the light artist
Mischa Kuball and curated by Christoph Brockhaus with the aid of Katja
Aßmann. With the world premiere of Intervention I
for voice and electronic sounds (2004) Christina Ascher will ring in
the beginning of the sound installation "Kantpark Stage" which can be
heard and seen henceforth daily from noon to midnight until November
15. Kunsu Shim, who developed the basic concept behind the sound
installation together with Gerhard Stäbler writes:
"Different
sounds - often low, rich in overtones, pleasurable- appear and
disappear from a great silence within the 12 - hour time stream and
transform the Kant Stage into a space of repose, illuminate it - like
light itself - audibly and invites one to connect with this location
for a while and to disseminate into the vastness of inner space.
Interventions again and again open windows into real spaces to
remember, to reflect, to dream only to return to silence."

the Schlagquartett Köln, consisting of percussionists Dirk Rothbrust,
Thomas Meixner, Achim Seyler and Boris Müller featuring soprano Eiko
Morikawa. The (premiere) performances are not the only events to be
anticipated with tension. The different performance spaces that change
from composition to composition and were conceptualized by the renowned
architect Tadao Ando as components of the new exhibition hall will
certainly offer a special visual and acoustic attraction.

Tour of Canada and the US
(May, 2004)
A
visiting professor position at Evergreen State College in Olympia
(Washington) stands at the center of the Canada/US tour, where Gerhard
Stäbler is currently the holder of the „Dan Evans Chair“ in
Composition. Numerous other activities accompany this tenure, which
lasts from mid - March until the beginning of June: Lectures at the
University of California Santa Cruz, the University of Washington
(Seattle) and at the Canadian Music Center in Vancouver, as well as
numerous concerts and performance evenings featuring works by the
composer. On May 23, an expanded and altered version of SPICES
(1) came to life in Los Angeles, Olympia and Seattle.
Stäbler created SPICES (1PLUS) for dance, chamber
Orchestra, tape, scents and vocal interventions - the latter referring
to the United States‘ martial invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. The
highly acclaimed world premiere was realized by the dancer and
choreographer Kabby Michell III, the Evergreen State Colleges‘ Vocal
Ensemble and the "Olympia Chamber Orchestra" under Maestro Arun Chandra.
The grand finale of the visiting professorship and the sojourn in the
United States consists of three evenings of performances with the
German-Korean composer Kunsu Shim. On May 26 both composers will create
an homage to Nam June Paik at Evergreen State College. In addition, on
June 3 works by Stäbler´s students that have been created in
cooperation with Stäbler, will be performed- including a new version of
the music-theater project futuressencexxx by
Stäbler and Shim based on texts by Italian futurists.

Successful
Japan Tour
(December 2003 February 2004)
Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim toured in Japan from December to
February 2004. A scholarship from the Japanese city Shuho-Cho enabled a
composer in residence in Yamaguchi. Concerts in various towns, e.g.
Tokyo, Kyoto and Akiyoshidai, were very successful: many people
listened to performances and interpretations on a high level. Piano
works by Stäbler and Shim were combined with performances in the frame
of a workshop at Akiyoshidai International Arts College with students
on January 16 and 17. Stäbler´s Traum 1/9/92 was
being presented by the Japanese pianist JongAh Yoon for the first time
in Japan. The composers themselves interpreted their perfomances piece
japonaises and Rachengold. In a
concert organised by the Goethe Institut on January 21 in Kyoto the
focus was even more on the performative aspect. Hommáge à
Nam June Paik, a co-production of Shim and Stäbler had its
premiere in Japan, numerous other performances in the fluxus tradition
e.g. good bye paradise for one performer with
plants from 1998 or Stäbler´s work for tape, Kalt·Erhitzt
were combined in the programme. Other concerts followed in Tokyo and
Kyoto were based on piano-works by Shim and Stäbler. Since (European)
tradition plays a very great role at the conservatories in Japan the
well-visited and progressive concerts caused great enthusiasm and
lively discussions between artists and audience.
CD-Release
with Stäbler´s Traum 1/9/92
(January 2004)
The
Goethe Institut Kyoto decided to publish a CD with various pieces by
German and Japanese artists. Among these are Stäbler, Kunsu Shim, Yuji
Takahashi, Jan Müller-Wieland sowie Seiichi Inagaki. Traum
1/9/92 has been released in its version for ensemble with
the MusikFabrik Nordrhein Westfalen (CPO 999259-2) and as a piano solo
interpreted by Paulo Alvares (Metier-Records 92075 a + b) . The piece
is based on the didactic play Die Mutter by
Bertolt Brecht. Stäbler transferred the text into a Morse-code, that
serves as the rhythmic foundation. The Japanes pianist Noriko Tokuoka
interpreted the live recorded piece in concert given in the Haus der
Kulturen der Welt in Berlin in August 2003.

EKO-Haus der japanischen Kultur e.V. in Düsseldorf on August 24. For
this occasion Stäbler and Shim wrote two pieces for Koto, which will be
interpreted by Makiko Goto. Before the concert the composer Peter Gahn
is going to talk about the rich tradition and the perspectives of the
extraordinary zither with 13 strings. Apart from the works for Koto the
pianist Martin von der Heydt is going to present works by Toshio
Hosokawa (Nacht-Klänge), Peter Gahn (Mit
geliehener Aussicht), Markus Bongartz, Stäbler (Internet

New book about Gerhard Staebler´s
interdisciplinarity
(August 2003)
The
musicologist Hella Melkert is very familiar with Staebler´s music. She
now presented her observations especially about the interdisciplinary
aspects of different works being composed in the last 15 years: e.g. FallZeit,
Kybele, Journal 9´1119,
Dalí, Spices-serie.
The book contains 146 pages with numerous analyses, illustrations of
scores, sketches and photos of Staebler´s scenic productions. It is
published in the serie "Zwischen/Töne" (edited by Hanns-Werner Heister)
and can be ordered in the net under Weidler-Verlag.

New
release with complete piano-work
(July 2003)
In
the next weeks the English label Metier Records is going to release all
piano-works by Gerhard Stäbler. Paulo Alvares, being involved in
Stäbler´s music as soloist and conductor presents experimental, graphic
notated works such as Hart auf Hart, Von
Branntwein und Finsternissen and more traditional notated
compositions such as Dalí or the solo-version of Traum
1.9.92.
The "release-party" will take place in the frame of a concert in
Cologne. Here Alvares is going to play the premiere of Stäbler´s new
piece ?! Musical essay about the limits of the possible
for every kind of keyboard - mechanic or electric (also accordion).
Other multimedia-pieces are presented by the string-quartet Caldron and
the Ensemble for aleatoric music and improvisation.
Madame
la Peste - Premiere in Saarbrücken
(June / July, 2003)
Staatstheater Saarbrücken will present Gerhard Stäbler´s third
music-theatre Madame la Peste (2001/2002) after
its world premiere in Duisburg last year. Matthias Kaiser, director and
dramaturge of the opera in Saarbrücken, wrote the libretto, which is
based on two novels: On Edgar Allan Poes gothic novel "The decline of
house Usher" from 1839, and on the polish writer Bruno Jasienskis
futuristic novel "Plague in Paris" (1928).
The music theatre is dealing with the question, if "human" systems can
be installed in a society. After the plague has murdered most people in
Paris, some survivors in a prison try to establish a new "socialistic"
system. In the end they fail, and the question remains, if a system
without ideology is possible.

Radiofeature
by Christoph Wagner
(June 18, 2003)
Different wooden mouth-organs were used in traditional Asian music. In
Japan the Sho was played by virtuos interpreters, in China the Sheng
became famous. Christoph Wagner is going to deal with traditional
aspects but will examine the reception of these fascinating instruments
in contemporary western music as well: the rock-formations Aerosmith
and Cranberries and the composers John Cage or Gerhard Stäbler
integrated Asian music-tradition in their works. Stäbler composed his
Cassandra-study Palast des Schweigens for Sho in
1992/93 and in 1994/95 he wrote Karas.Krähen for
tape, voice, sho, doublebass and drums. Mayumi Miyata recorded these
works on a wonderful CD. (Wergo, Edition ZKM 282 056 - 2)

Russian
premiere of Die Reise
(June 4, 2003)
After the world-premiere from Die Reise [The
yoyage] played by the Ives-Ensemble last year Igor Dronov now conducted
the ensemble-work at Tschaikowskij-conservatory in Moscow. The New
Music Ensemble combined Stäbler´s work in a programme with works by
Paul Dessau, Alfred Schnittke, Galina Ustvolskaya and Hans-Werner Henze
(El Cimarón). The days before the successfull and
well-visited concert Gerhard Stäbler gave lectures about his work at
the conservatory.
American
Premiere of Speed
(May 9, 2003)
Speed seems to be an adequate title for Stäbler´s vokal composition:
with all energy, as rapid as possible, Stäbler´s asemantic syllables
have to be interpreted. This heroic task is (hopefully) going to be
managed by Carol Genetti, Julia Hathaway and Hollis Bolton. In the
frame of Discrete Series, just founded in Chicago by the poets Zach
Seldess and Kerri Sonnenberg, Stäbler´s work will be performed for the
first time. Poems by Stephen Ratcliffe will be in the centre of the
evening.

and accordion. In April and May Sven Hermann (Accordion) and Matthias
Hettmer (E-bass) are going to perform works of Stäbler (Gift.Gelb,
KopfFüssler) and Shim (A
silent swaying breath, Kurzschluss) in
Berlin and Korea. In Berlin Shim´s new composition Kurzschluss
will be presented as a world-premiere. It will be part of a
concept-work by 10 composers – each composer, among them Stäbler with
his KopfFüssler – presented a short piece of
5-seconds duration.

Korean
Premiere of Karas.Krähen
(March 21, 2003)
After the successful irish premiere, presented by the Crash-ensemble in
November 2002, Karas.Krähen will now be
interpreted in its quite unusual instrumentation with tape, voice, sho,
double-bass and percussion (1994/95) in Korea. The work combines themes
of Asian mythology with dangers of modern civilization. During the
festival "Music today" it will have its premiere on March 21. The
composer will be in Korea since he is going to take part in a jury for
an international competition for composers.
Tour
in Korea with Kunsu Shim
(March 17 – 21, 2003)
After an extensive tour in North America Stäbler and Kunsu Shim are now
going to visit the east, more precisely: South-Korea. After
performances in New York, San Francisco and Duisburg Futuressencexxx
is presented in a new version as Korean premiere. The reminiscence to
the Italian futurism is presented two times during the festival "Music
today" (March 17/19, 2003). On March 18 Stäbler creates an evening,
that is dedicated to one of the main figure of Fluxus, Nam June Paik.
Apart from these performances Stäbler´s composition Karas.Crows
for voice, sho, double-bass, percussion and tape (1994/95) will be
performed on March 21. After the performances Stäbler will participate
in a jury choosing the winner of the international prize composition
Seoul 2003.
Premiere
of dry leaves with Janne Rättyä in Salzburg
(March 2, 2003)
Gerhard Stäbler´s works were inspired by literature quite often: the
choir-composition …for Kavafis… (2000) is a
musical reflection on the vita of the Greece author Konstantin Kavafis,
the music-theatre CassandraComplex (1993/94) is
based on Christa Wolff´s reception of the Cassandra myth and recently
Stäbler referred to the Polish writer Bruno Jasiensky in his opera Madame
la Peste (2002). In dry leaves for
accordion-solo Paul Auster inspired Stäbler with some of his poems
collected in Disappearances. "dry leaves begins - but where?, stops,
but when?" - Stäbler reflects on Auster´s thoughts about transient
conditions of life. Janne Rättyä is going to perform dry
leaves during the festival "Salzburger Aspekte" on March 2,
2003.
Radio-Programme
with Hella Melkert
(February 1, 2003)
The
musicologist Hella Melkert is going to present a Stäbler-portrait of
45-minutes in the programme of the German radio station
Deutschlandfunk. Political and ethical questions with examples from
three works will be discussed also with biographical backgrounds. Then
Melkert will examine the role of divergent influences, that
characterize Stäbler´s work. Especially connexes with art, literature
and the reception of other composers are important here.

(November 23, 2002)
The
experimental Duo Interzone Perceptible is going to play Gerhard
Stäbler´s Gift.Gelb for electrified accordion,
e-bass and tape in the United States for the first time. Gift.Gelb,
composed in winter 2001/02, represents a cynical allegory to the war in
Afghanistan. Apart from Stäbler´s work Interzone Perceptible are
interpreting a piece from Michael Rook (Kollaps/Relaps
(wormhole), Premiere of a new piece) and Hans-Joachim Hespos
(kaleidoskopes luftsilber).
November

Irish
premiere of Karas.Krähen
(November 17, 2002)
In Karas.Krähen
Stäbler connected themes from Asian mythology with threatening dangers
of modern civilization. Ten suns existed in ancient china, nine of them
were shot down by the legendary archer Yi. After that a crow beared the
tenth sun. From the modern civilizations point of view the function of
this crow has become quite negative: temperatures on earth are rising
dramatically, our "artificial suns", the atombomb and nuclear power
stations are threatening. Here the crow is not a positive life spender
but more a "bringer of death".
In this ambivalence between orient and occident Stäbler is composing
his Karas.Krähen. The Irish Crash Ensemble,
mostly concentrating on multimedia and experimental works, is now
performing the composition in the version for voice, keyboard, double
bass, percussion and CD. Further composition are being played from
Steven Gardner, Michael Meierhof, David Lang, Eva Beglarian and Julia
Wolfe.

Gerhard
Stäbler and Kunsu Shim - Composer in Residence with the Canadian
Kore-Ensemble
(October 25 – 27, 2002)
In
the frame of a Canada-tournée Gerhard Stäbler and Kunsu Shim will be
composers in residence in Montréal. At the beginning of the residence
McGill percussion quartet will perform two percussion pieces from Shim
and Stäbler, after the composers had introduced the musicians to their
works. After that, three concerts will present the music of the two
composers: On October 25 the auditorium will be introduced to Kunsu
Shim´s discreet and very elegant music by the Bozzini string quartet.
The musicians will concentrate on Shim´s recently composed
chamber-music for strings: two places for violin
solo (1998), wäre ich ein vogel, ein wasser und ein wind
for string-quartet (2002) and luftrand (für klaus und dirk)
(2000). On the next day this concert is followed by an evening with the
Motion-ensemble and Stäbler´s and Shim´s Hommage To Nam June
Paik, Stäbler´s Winter, Blumen in a
solo-version for double-bass, Shim´s before for
double bass and his in zwei Teilen for ensemble.
The last concert of Kore-Ensemble and the musicians Jonathan Goldman
(accordion) und Andrew Miller (double-bass) is concentrating on
Stäbler´s Oeuvre: Die Nacht sitzt am Tisch for
voice, clarinet, bassclarinet and smells and KARAS.KRÄHEN
for voice, ensemble and tape, Spuren for
saxophone-quartet are going to be interpreted.

Journal
9´1119 in Berlin
(September 29, 2002)
The
percussionist Dirk Rothbrust and the flute-player Dietmar Wiesner are
going to perform Journal 9´1119 for percussion,
flute, tape and smells in Berlin. Stäbler recorded earlier written
pieces on tape (e.g. Strike the ear (1987/88) for
string-quartet and the 1972 composed drüber...
for eight active screamers) and combined them with flute and percussion
sounds from filled water bottles and metal bowls. The composition is
performed in a programme with works from Tom Johnson (Rational
Melodies for flute-solo) and Bernd Thewes (Subcode
for pasteboard-drum).

Duo
Archaeopteryx performing Journal 9´1119 in Saarbrücken
(August 14, 2002)
1996
Gerhard Stäbler composed Journal 9´1119 for the
experimental Duo Archaeopteryx. Now the musicians will perform the work
for flutes, drums, tape and smells for the first time. Stäbler composed
the piece with rows of numbers he took from Philip Johnson-Laird´s book
"Computer in head". Like in his Internet-cycle the composers cites
fragments of own works like strike the ear and drüber....
Scenic elements play an important role in Journal 9´1119:
Lots of plastic garbage is placed in the centre of the percussion. The
performance will largely take place on stage, but at the end the piece
will be concluded behind the audience with unusual instruments like
metal-bowls or bottles filled with water. Before Stäblers work is
performed Duo Archaeoteryx will play works by Dieter Mack (temu,
2001) and Palle Dahlstedt (Anakolut, 2000, awarded
with first prize from Gaudeamus competition 2001).

Dalí´s
premiere in Japan
(July 20, 2002)
The
first performance of Gerhard Stäblers Dalí, musica mágica
will be given in Japan by the Japanese pianist Kazue Nakamura. Dalí,
musica mágica for piano was written in 1995/96. The work
reflects Stäblers impressions in the Dalí-museum in Figueres. Stäbler
was especially attracted by the painters controverse, excentric
character and the strange, but fascinating nature surrounding Dalí.
51 passages each containing 33-crotchets (exclusive an extensive pause)
are influenced by Schuberts piano music, that went beyound musical
conventions in the early 19. century. The artificial text to Dalí,
musica mágica is based on Walter Benjamins famous essay "Das
Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit" (Works of
art in the age of technical reproduction). This essay is dealing with
the problem of art-reception, that is dominated by new medias (photo,
film) concentrated on reproduction. Nakamura will play Dalí
in a programme with works by Jo Kondo, Sadayuki Kaminaga an Hiroyuki
Yamamoto.

Musik
Welten III
(June 21, 2002)
Three extensive Stäbler-portraits at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein,
Duisburg Theatre and Tonhalle Düsseldorf are followed by a night called
"Musik Welten III" (Music worlds III) at June 21. The programme is
concentrating on Stäblers works for voice. All of the four Belfast
Breakfast songs, Stäbler composed in Belfast 1996, are
interpreted. These songs are dominated by extremes in many respects:
tempi should sometimes be "as fast as possible", dynamics are changing
rapidly from extreme forte to whispering. In the foreword of the score
Stäbler writes: "Every hint of mediocrity is unfavourable to the
interpretation of the compositions."
Apart from works for voice (Secrets (1998) - songs
based on poems by Wolf Wondratschek, Rosenkranz
(1995), secret score for a vocalist) instrumental works are being
presented as well: Krusten/Crusts for cello
(1998), Traum 1/9/92 (1992) for ensemble, eilig.dressiert
(2000) for three flutes, Hart auf Hart (1996) for
ensemble. One work from Kunsu Shim (Three Pieces
for Cello, 1992) and Modest Mussorsky (Without sun,
songs I - III for singer and piano) are also presented.

Müllfahrer
von San Francisco and Die Reise (The voyage) in the Netherlands
(May 5 – 15, 2002)
The
well known Dutch Ives Ensemble interpretes two works of Gerhard Stäbler
in 4 concerts. The "Stäbler Ensemble-Hit" Die Müllfahrer von
San Francisco will be performed in the small version,
Michael Oesterle had arranged. As Die Müllfahrer
will be a Dutch premiere, Die Reise for clarinet,
trumpet, trombone, cello, piano, drums and tape will be performed for
the first time worldwide. Stäbler produced the tape with Christian
Venghaus from Zentrum für Kunst- und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe. It
contains tram-sounds recorded in Gdansk (Danzig) for Avi Kaisers
dance-theatre Endstation Zaspa. The score shows
numerous tutti-actions and is characterized by hard dynamic contrasts,
scenic actions dominate as well: Passages, in which the
instrumentalists have to produce quiet, but striking sounds on unusual
sound generators are interpolated. Apart from Stäblers
works Marginal Way, composed by Michael Oesterle,
and Kolchis, Kalt from Wolfgang Rihm are being
played.

Madame
la Peste - Stäblers new music-theatre
(April 26, 2002)
On
April 26 the the premiere of Gerhard Stäblers new music theatre Madame
la Peste will take place at Theatre Duisburg. Matthias
Kaiser, director and dramaturge of the opera in Saarbrücken, wrote the
libretto, which is based on two novels: On Edgar Allan Poes gothic
novel "The decline of house Usher" from 1839, and on the polish writer
Bruno Jasienskis futuristic novel "Plague in Paris". (1928).
The music theatre is dealing with the question, if "human" systems can
be installed in a society. After the plague has murdered most people in
Paris, some survivors in a prison try to establish a new "socialistic"
system. In the end they fail, and the question remains, if a system
without ideology is possible.
